And now batting for the New York Yankees, Number 53

BOBBY ABREU!!!

I didn't think it would happen until tomorrow, IF it happened!
I didn't think it would happen without giving up Phil Hughes! Or Eric Duncan for that matter.
Let's have some applause for Cashman on that one!!! (golf clap)

But wait, there's more! COREY LIDLE will also be wearing Pinstripes (and not red ones). As a side note case ya didn't know, Corey grew up with, and played HS ball with Jason Giambi. I hate to use the word "average" when it comes to a starting pitcher, cause that hardly describes what it takes to BE a major league pitcher of any talent level. But I like his numbers more than some pitchers we could have gotten. I know most people would say better him than Jon Lieber, but in truth, I felt it was a mistake letting him go when we could have kept him another year so cheaply.  He gave us a lot last year. But hey, LOTS of pitchers gave us more, and we let THEM go. Anyone remember a guy named Andy Pettitte? But I digress. He should fill in the number 5 spot QUITE nicely. Let's just hope he doesn't take the normal NL to AL downhill that most pitchers do. Jaret Wright can chill in the pen. If/When Pavano and Dotel make it here, let things settle where they may. After yesterdays outing, Randy may need a little break a while anyway, so who knows. Corey may be a number 4.

Abreu makes for a little dilemma once Shef and Godzilla get back. But right now, I'd rather too many than too few. Guiel can always be used as.... well I have no idea! I have to assume the lineup in the outfield will be:
Abreu RF
Damon CF
Melky LF
It's time to use Bernie as a DH against lefties only. This means Giambi will probably play 1st though, maybe too often. I don't envy Torre in the decision making process here, but I'm sure we can count on him using Bernie more than he should. DISCLAIMER: That was not a Bernie Bash. YES, I love Bernie too.... But not full time any more.

Overall, I am thrilled with the trade. And I can't say I recall saying that too often the last 2 or 12 years.

We gave up:
C.J. Henry SS
Jesus Sanchez C
Matt Smith LHP
Carlos Monasterios RHP

I'm not discrediting ANY of these guys, I wouldn't do that. For all I know they could all end up in Coopestown! All solid players, and GOOD prospects. The key here is we retained what we (we=The Yankees, and the fans) consider to be our "top" prospects. We weren't going to get nothing for nothing! I repeat myself; I a very happy with this trade.

That's all for now, I just HAD to comment on it once I heard.

CONGRATS TO MOOSE on Win #13!!! It wasn't the spanking I wanted to give the D-Rays, but it's a W.

it's the 65 rbi's that's the most important stat; that will help a lot

Abreu i think will find his power-hitting again (maybe the pinstripes will inspire him)

I AM a red sox afn if you cant tell!

I think he should prove better than Ponson or (2006) Chacon. At the price, with a contract ending this year, its a no-lose, just like Ponson was. Ponson may never get more of a chance than he has gotten.

THAT MAKES SENSE!

RED SOX FAN??? sheesh, you guys come out of everywhere! 's alright, everyones welcome!
First of all, I live in PHILLIES land, so I can't wait to get to work and rub it in on the boys!

Secondly, I love baseball talk of any type, and I don't get much at home or work. So even from a Sox fan, I will happily converse.

Yeah I love talkig baseball too i am at the sox game now!

I am also a Sox fan.
Does anybody want to explain how the Yankees can afford to pay for these guys? According to ESPN, the Yankees will pick up Abreus ENTIRE 2006 contract - all 15 million of it. There should definitely be some type of salary cap or some other way of regulating spending. At the Yankees current payroll (213 million now with Abreu), they are spending almost 100 million more than the Red Sox. Even if the Yankees didn't have to pay their players that got hurt, they would still be spending 50 million more than the Red Sox are spending. Everyone remarks at how the Yankees are doing so well with all the injuries, but their losses do not even the odds. If a team like the Colorado Rockies (40 million payroll) could afford to spend 200 million, and made the same good decisions in signing players that they have in now, they would probably win 130 games.

Sorry, I don't know why it posted twice.

Florida Marlins have a payroll < $15 Mil and are rumored to have D-Train and others on the block to SAVE MORE ON PAYROLL! They GET $40 Million from Revenue Sharing! What's the owner DO with that money if not buy players???? Pockets $25 Mil and claims he is losing money? Point being there are extremes on each side. The teams that lost/lose money right now are Yanks, Red Sox, and Mets, I believe in that order too. The ones who pay OUT the most in revenue sharing, and have the highest payroll. If the owners in those teams had $40 Mil salaries, everyone would be complaining they aren't spending money on players, and just pocketing profits, not caring about WINNING. like... The Phillies! I could right a letter to my season ticket holders after yesterdays trade if I was the Phillies owner; "Dear Season Ticket Holder, We made a trade yesterday that will save us a bunch of money (that I will be keeping). The remaining games this year, nearly 50% of the season, may not be as fun for you to go to, because we have already conceded the Season by making this trade. But we still value your business, so please come out and support the remaining team members while they are still here, and don't forget to send payment for next years season ticket plan. Thanks!" There is a team that can afford to keep paying a reasonable salary, has a NICE new stadium, GREAT fan support, and only cares about the bottom line. Steinbrenner only cares about WINNING. So does your owner! We as fans should be thrilled with this! Are some of the salaries ridiculous? SURE! It's professional sports! Revenue sharing was supposed to be the equalizer, rather than going to a salary cap. But MLB can't tell teams how MUCH, or conversely, how LITTLE to spend! I don't know if it's "right" the way it is now, but I don't know of a better way either. I am against a salary cap because I think teams in bigger markets should be able to spend more if they make more. Maybe it doesn't seem fair, but those teams have MORE fans, so there are more people to be upset about poor performance. i.e. the way it is designed is to keep the most people happy (in my opinion) which is good for baseball, and good business. And profits at the parks are only a piece of the money pie. Merchandising is the big one. I won't hesitate to buy a new Yankee hat or jersey. If they **** this year, I know they will try harder next year, and they are always TRYING to put the best team on the field that they can. If I was a Marlins fan, I would never spend a dime on anything with the Marlins logo on it. WOW did I ramble on here! The answer to your question (I haven't answered it yet?) is merchandising. That’s how they can afford to pay those salaries, and "lose" money. I do know of one organization that makes money no matter who wins or what the salaries are; Major League Baseball.

Isaiah, the reason we can afford players is because we have the best owner in all of sports. I read this article and it pretty much sums it up....
http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=AqUbVU1ULWpHwQCEaYPSSZs5nYcB?slug=dw-yankees073006&prov=yhoo&type=lgns

King George is not the wealthiest owner is sports, but he is the one that cares the most about winning. I am sick and tired of hearing fans from other teams complain about this. If your owner cared more about the team winning then the amount of money that he/she put in his/her pocket at the end of the year then maybe your payroll would be higher too. It's not Georges fault that other teams sit on their money.... he wants to win. That's why they play the game. He's not breaking any rules... and at the end of the year he is giving his money to the teams with lower payrolls. So my team has to pay a team who does not like to spend any money. This topic angers me.

John and Amber hit it right on the head. Amber your article that you found was dead on also. Who wouldn't want to have a owner who will put his money where his mouth is?? Abreu is going to shine in NY and all us Yankee fans are eagerly awaiting his arrival!! Go Yanks!!
